The biggest capacity building leaders need to do

Part 4/4 in a video series where I reflect on a recent team workshop.

Being an effective leader is as much about setting good goals as it is about having ‘difficult conversations’ when someone lets you down or you disagree on the best way to get to the goal.

Your team should be having lively discussions around:

  • How are we going to measure success?

  • How do we best articulate the value that we offer our customers?

  • In what ways can we significantly increase the value we offer over time (since that is what people are willing to pay more for)?

Getting to a higher level of impact will require a willingness to tell yourself truth, take time to look at what the data is telling us, and understand the nature of the problems we are facing - both our clients or within our organization.

Bottom-line: To get more done as a team, leaders need to build their capacity to be with discomfort, uncertainty, and fear. You have to be willing to sit with the discomfort of the in-between or the uncertainty of not knowing. 😬

⚠️ Be careful not jump into “Some goal is better than no goal!” when the right goal could be on the other side of that discomfort if you can listen more deeply and get curious. Feeling into a space where we don’t have certainty but we are willing to experiment and try and figure it out.
