Which test should I take to find my Enneagram type?
I know you want to find your Enneagram type, like right now. And I don’t blame you!
But as you may have found out - the Enneagram system is more nuanced and complex than other personality systems. A lot of people have trouble identifying which of the 9 types is theirs, so you are not alone!
There are a handful of options people use to find their type, including:
Take an online test
Read books
Work with a coach
Take an online course
I explain more in my course why it can be tricky for some to land on their number and walk through common mistakes people make. But I know many of you have taken an online test or are planning to take one, so I thought I would share a little about the online tests that I prefer that are available right now and share a couple of my favorites.
Caution: A note about online tests
The first thing I want you to know: You do not need to take an online test in order to find your type. But taking a test can help guide your intuition and speed up the process for some.
You should know that most online tests get it wrong about half of the time, especially if you are new to the system. So keep an open mind, and use these as initial data points to help you narrow in on your type.
I suggest you use one of the following tests...
Best:
As far as I’m concerned, the iEQ9 test is the definitive Enneagram test, with lots of science behind it. It costs more than the others (~ $60 for the standard test and $120 for the professional report), but it has a 95% accuracy rate. This test provides extensive PDF documentation about your type that is very insightful if you understand how to use it. This is the test that I use in my programs and recommend to clients, especially if using the Enneagram in a professional environment. You can email me to take this test directly - I’m happy to help you through this process and offer it to my clients at cost.
Cheap:
The RHETI test is offered for $12 and will rank your top 3 outcomes. Lots of people use this test, but it can be confusing to not get a definitive answer on which type is yours. When I work with this test, we use it as a starting point. It has a reported 60% accuracy rate for the top 3 results.
Free:
Eclectic Energies offers two free tests - one that will even guess your instinctual subtype.
You can find the beta of a new free test that seems promising from the Art of Growth called Understanding You, Understanding Others. They have one for youth and one to test the instincts as well.
Alternatively, you can try using the EnneaApp's test to find your type.
So remember, depending on which test you take the accuracy can range wildly. As always, take the results as a data point on this journey to start your process of reflection. Feel free to contact me with questions along the way. I’m happy to help.
I also offer a service where you can take the iEQ9 and I’ll do all the figuring out for you and help you make sense of the results.
